QCQ #3

Quotation:

“Young and old around the world are re-creating the culture industry, or at least adding a wrinkle to it, by having fun together. Don’t let the unpolished nature of our amateur contributions block your view of the future,” (pg. 115).

Comment:

I found this interesting because there is always this stereotype that older people are incapable of using technology. This quote used that common assumption to point out that just because it is a stereotype doesn’t mean it’s true. Anyone can use technology if they understand it. Certain technology was created to be used as a form of communication. Technology was created to speed up a process; mail, texts, jets, etc. Time is important for all aspects of life. If the timing is not right, there could be a completely different outcome. While it allows people to communicate; what kinds of ways can people communicate? They can share their opinions, likes and dislikes, offer advice, and express feelings. This quote includes the words ‘young’ and ‘old’. What does this make you think? An old man and a baby? A grandmother and her 10 year old granddaughter? It could mean anything in relation to your memories. The term “amateur contributions” does not make much sense to me, but it could be related to the assumption, again, that older people have a harder time using technology. While this may be true in some cases, it should not be a blanket statement. Many older people have used technology, such as social media, to convey a message or share a memory. It takes practice to learn anything. The word ‘fun’ also appears in this quote. It is important to realize the relationship between the young and the old. They each learn from each other. The old teach the young. The young open the eyes of the old. It is a relationship which allows growth.

Question:

Do you think age has to do with how well information is conveyed by readers? If a reader knew the author’s age, would it matter?
